SOUTHERN CROSS MILLS AND TOWERS ARE
HEAVILY GALVANIZED

All exposed steel parts of Mills and Towers are galvanized after manufacture. You pay no more for this long-life protection that eliminates time and costs needed for repainting black towers.

BEARINGS REPLACEABLE WITHOUT DISMANTLING 
Gearwheel, pinion and main bearings are replaceable and can be renewed without bringing the mill engine down from the top of the tower, thereby saving valuable time.

WHEEL ARMS SCREW DIRECTLY INTO HUB
Made of round steel, wheel arms which screw into hub are designed to be always in tension, providing a light rigid frame to permanently hold the sails in position.

SAILS BUILT INTO THE WHEEL
These galvanized stiff steel sails built into the wheel for rigid positioning are spaced, shaped and curved to give maximum pumping efficiency with easy starting.

QUICK ACTING SENSITIVE VANE
Of galvanized sheet steel, the fish tail shape vane is of correct surface dimensions to react immediately to changes in wind direction. The vane is mounted on a rigid angle steel frame, pivoted from the rear of the Mill engine.

DOUBLE BALANCED GEARING EXTENDS LIFE
Illustration at top of page shows portion of the gearbox cut away, disclosing the double gearing of the "IZ" Pattern Windmill. Notice that the gears are running in oil all the time. The wind wheel transmits its power from two pinions on the main shaft through two gear wheels arm two connecting rods to the cross head and pump rod. The pump rod is centrally positioned between the two gears. The gears are independent of each other, which ensures that each takes an equal part of the load. Both pinions and gearwheels are machine cut to ensure long life and quietness of operation.

EACH PINION HAS TWO LOCKING SCREWS
For safety under heavy load conditions each pinion has two hardened locking screws at right angles to each other which tighten onto fiats on the main shaft.

YOU CHANGE GEARBOX OIL ONCE A YEAR
. . . NO FURTHER OILING IS NEEDED 

The "IZ" Mill has automatic oiling; main bearing, pinion and gearwheel bearings are constantly flooded with oil, carried up by the rotating gearwheels from the oil reservoir in the bottom of the gearbox. Other moving parts needing oil are also automatically oiled. Here is complete freedom from attention for 12 months.


EXCLUSIVE SOUTHERN CROSS AUTOMATIC GOVERNING
Governing is by means of the SOUTHERN CROSS GRAVITY SYSTEM which works automatically and employs neither springs nor counter-balances. It never requires adjustment. The 'wind wheel is set slightly to one side of the mast pipe so 'that, as the wind speed increases, the wheel is turned around in the direction of the vane and thus a smaller area is exposed to the wind. Then, as the wind speed decreases, the wheel turns back to its normal position.
The vane hinge is inclined at an angle which makes the vane rise when governing. This inclination of the vane hinge is designed so that, at the beginning of governing, the rise is not too steep but becomes steeper as the governing becomes greater and thereby provides sufficient resistance to any wind pressure to, keep the wheel running at normal pumping speed, and, at the same time, ensure the safety of the mill.

SENSITIVE AND FREE PIVOTING TURNTABLE
The weight of the mill which rotates on a fixed pivot tube on top of a welded steel stub tower, is carried on smooth oiled sheet steel turntable washers. This provides a very sensitive and free pivoting turntable, allowing the mill to move with the slightest change in wind direction.

RIGID STUB TOWER FORMS APEX
Bolted to the top of the Mill Tower is a welded steel Stub Tower forming an apex for the tower proper, and a convenient attachment when an "IZ" Mill is fitted to an existing tower.

INSPECTION LADDER FOR THE LARGER MILLS
An inspection ladder, which moves with the mill when it turns on the turntable, is fitted to the 10 ft., 12. ft. and 14 ft. sizes of windmills and is a great convenience. This ladder is not necessary on the smaller size mills, as the 6 ft. and 8 ft. mills can be readily inspected from the tower platform.

REEFING GEAR IS SIMPLE TO OPERATE
The whole of the reefing gear is outside the mast pipe and is of an extremely simple nature. There is nothing to adjust, and the mill is reefed merely by pulling down the reefing handle at the bottom of the tower.

"IZ" MILLS CAN BE FITTED TO OLD TOWERS
These windmills can be fitted to any make of tower, either 3-post or 4-post. There are a considerable number of windmills, twenty years or more old, which are wearing out and, generally, it is cheaper to replace the old mill with a new one on the old tower, providing of course, that the old tower is still in good order, which is often the case, and almost always the case if the old tower is a galvanized structure. In most cases, the cost of a few major parts for the old windmill would be the cost of a brand new mill.
